Newman Documentary
Oxford
Day 2
One of the most beautiful cities in the world and home of the oldest universities, Oxford is known as the city of spires. It is has been the home of many thinkers, writers, scientists, statesmen, and religious leaders. Among the latter stand out William Laud, John Wesley, and John Henry Newman.
Today the film team: Gustavo (the director), Bruno (the cameraman), and Jordana (the team coordinator) arrived in Oxford and began by attending Mass at St. Aloysius church, the church of the Oratory. It was founded in 1875 by the Jesuits, years after Newman had left Oxford in 1846.

Newman wished to begin an Oratory of St. Philip Neri at Oxford but it was not possible during his life time. Tomorrow the team will interview Fr. Nicholas Edmonds-Smith at the Oratory.
After Mass, Paul Shrimpton, teacher at Magdalen School and historian of education, showed the team around Oxford. They went to Oriel College, Christ Church and other places where Newman often walked. Paul is an expert on Newman’s educational philosophy, the Catholic University of Ireland and the Oratory School. He will be interviewed on Tuesday.
Paul also took the team to St. Mary, the Virgin, the university church where Newman was vicar and preached memorable sermons to students and professors. Here is a photo of the pulpit from where he preached. Those who went to hear him would remember the deep impression he made on their minds and hearts.

Afterwards the team walked through the charming Oxford streets taking in the architecture and life. Tomorrow will be another day of filming and interviews.
Please keep us in your prayers.
Here is a prayer that you can say with us:
O God, who bestowed on your Priest Saint John Henry Newman the grace to follow your kindly light and find peace in your Church; graciously grant that, through his intercession and example, we may be led out of shadows and images into the fullness of your truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
(Memorial Mass of St. John Henry Newman)
